Hellebores grow in the shadows and thrive in the darkest months of the year, when the days are short and there is little else to see in the garden.

Looking at the black hellebore, Hellebore Officinalis, it is easy to understand how their gothic appearance and poisonous roots have inspired the many dark and sinister stories that surround them. But the ominous and difficult reputation of the hellebore is forgiven when it comes to pressing. They are the dream; they hold their shape and colour beautifully and, of course, we can manipulate those beautiful heads so that they stare at us straight in the face, as they rarely do when they are growing in the ground.
